The 1983 Sydney Theatre Company replica of the Royal Shakespeare Company production 'Nicholas Nickleby' was a significant theatrical event in Australia for all the wrong reasons. Here was a show that was cleverly created by English theatre artists. The only achievement of the Sydney Theatre Company was to duplicate it. It was a great example of colonial culture at play in Australia and everything that was wrong with Australian theatre in the 1980s.
